Who are at risk of getting BPD?

Borderline Personality Disorder occurs in all cultures. In America, 2% of the population (1 in 50) have been diagnosed with BPD while 0.07% are diagnosed every year. It is more common among people over the age of 18, but there are teenagers who have been diagnosed with BPD.

The risk factors for BPD include:

  • Genetic: There is a connection between BPD and heredity. It is known to have been passed down among family members, which means that a person has higher risk of getting BPD if he/she has a family member with the disorder.
  • Personal Experience: A history of childhood traumas such as sexual, physical, and emotional abuses increase a person's risk of getting BPD.
  • Current Condition: Stresses also contribute to cause BPD.
